How to Start in Cybersecurity: A Practical Roadmap

Build the right foundation before chasing tools: networks, systems, protection, monitoring, then specialization.

Start with networks and systems

You cannot protect what you do not understand. Learn IP, DNS, HTTP and routing, then Windows and Linux basics, permissions and logs. Security tools will then become meaningful rather than a collection of buttons.

Develop security thinking

Understand confidentiality, integrity, availability, risk management, common threats and least privilege. Apply the concepts to a firewall, logs and realistic events in a safe lab.

Specialize after the foundation

Possible directions include SOC and defensive analysis, network and firewall security, ethical testing, or governance. Build small projects and document your decisions; evidence of practice is stronger than a long tool list.
